There is a story to this colour, but it has some unexplained holes. In 1966 Rootes were withdrawing the Imp from US and CDN sales - maybe a decision made in Detroit after the Chrysler takeover - and decided to make a final run-out batch for CDN in special metallic bronze and silver liveries, neither colour being normal Imp choices. They were going to be Super Imps with extra under-bumper guards, whitewall tyres, more powerful heater for Canadian winters, and a couple of other trinkets. But the allocation was cancelled, so the production batch was switched to a UK "Spring Special" for early 1967 - my memory is 250 cars in each colour, so total 500 - see this example. But I don't understand how an intended LHD batch - if they actually existed - could become RHD for UK. Also our picture above is not a Super Imp and has plain bumpers. So the complete story is not yet known. But it does explain a rare livery on Corgi's 251 Imp, (normally dark blue) - more info here. |
