Quote 1977 Wheatcroft-Hart R26
Pictured is a 1977 Wheatcroft-Hart R26 Formula 2 car.

The car was entered by Donington Park owner Tom Wheatcroft for the European Formula 2 Championship in 1976 and 1977.

Although entered for the first round of the 1976 season, the R26's first appearance came at the second round at Thruxton. The car was powered by an Abarth engine and driven by Formula 1 journeyman Brian Henton. However, an engine failure ensured that the Englishman failed to start the race.

The car was entered for the races at Pau, Hockenheim and Rouen-les-Essarts but failed to appear.

For 1977, the straight-six Abarth powerplant was replaced by a four-cylinder Hart engine and the R26 was driven in the first two rounds of the season by former BRM, Lotus and Brabham F1 driver Bob Evans.

The Englishman retired from the first round at Silverstone and was an unclassified twelfth in the following race at Thruxton after suffering a mid-race puncture.

Although the car showed some promise, development work on the R26 ground to a halt as Tom Wheatcroft concentrated his efforts on renovating the Donington Park circuit and the ever-expanding Donington Collection, of which the R26 is now an exhibit.
