Thomas Edward Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, died on a Brough Superior Model SS100 1932 on May, 19th 1935 |

The movie bike is probably a Brough Superior but which model? The 'Clouds Hill' bike on which he crashed is thought to be this one, "George VII" or 'GW 2275'.... http://www.realclassic.co.uk/news04011600.html looks quite a bit different. To me the movie shows an earlier model but which one? Catalogue details of some Brough Superiors http://broughscott.bravehost.com/Brough/CataloguePictures.htm |

This bike is not a Brough-Superior, they didn't begin production until after the war and were all twins, this bike is a single. My first guess is Singer. |

Do you know that's David Lean riding it. |

This is a picture taken on the set of Lawrence of Arabia in 1961 http://img.prewarcar.com/prewar/cars/Joe_Pea_502RB.jpg Here is the article accompanying it. Link to "www.prewarcar.com" I wonder if it is the same machine as pictured here. It is a Triumph model H. -- Last edit: 2008-10-30 08:48:25 |

It's not a Triumph model H and is definately not a Brough! If this is the photo of the bike that we're talking about http://img.prewarcar.com/prewar/cars/Joe_Pea_502RB.jpg then it looks like a Triumph SD. We assume this because it has chain rear drive (not a belt) and the hand gear change is mounted on the tank (the H has a gear lever directly mounted on the gearbox up to 1920 and thereafter has a link system via a mounting on the vertical frame tube below the saddle. It also has the SD type enclosed fork spring which although at one point was catalogued for the H was possibly not supplied on the H except by special order. The SD is similar to the H in many other ways and is essentially an updated version of the H. The SD was made from approximately 1920 - 1927. Those strange front mudguard stays are to channel water away from the rider. |

Timestamp 01:58:52 for the thumbnail. Other motorcycles, not sure if they're the same one. ![]() ![]() -- Last edit: 2025-03-30 11:15:29 |
