This jeep shows weight reduction modifications seen on many "airborne" jeeps. The windshield, top bows and side/rear body handles are removed. On the rear of the vehicle, the spare tire, fuel can & bracket, and rear bumpers are usually removed. All but the center 2 slats in the grille are removed. The front bumper ends are cut off with a reinforcement to the fender added. One headlight is removed and replaced with the blackout drive light typically mounted on the fender. Anything to reduce the weight. These jeeps were often delivered via non powered gliders. The horizontal slat grille located in front of the radiator may be for protection from debris? Possible a wooden window shutter? |
