Yes it is a WC51. (A common misconception but WC did not stand for Weapons Carrier or even Walter Chrysler. It was part of the official Dodge Division of the Chrysler Corporation's nomenclature referencing year model designed, weight class, number of drive axles etc... There are models of VC, WC, WD, WDX, WFM, WH, WL, WKD, WGM and many many more. The early military models were based on civilian trucks such as "VC" V-1940 C-half ton & "WC" W-1941 C-half ton where a numerical suffix was added to designate a "military" model. Hence WC3, WC 12 etc... When the heavier duty 3/4 ton models came out in 1942 the old nomenclature remained in WC51, WC62 etc...even though heaver class trucks). I believe the term "Weapons Carrier" was from the truck carrying a Weapons Detachment of 8 men and an officer (plus driver). Others can surely give more historical information. |
