Dual front lap & shoulder safety-belts were introduced on GM's rounded-line pickups and utilities in 1975 for the 1976 model year. A safety milestone for full-size pickups. They also included a comfort function and emergency locking retractors (ELRs).

Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation would follow one model year later, putting dual front lap & shoulder safety-belts in their pickups in 1976 for the 1977 model year.

1973-1987 (1991) rounded-line pickups and utilities were also the first full-size trucks to feature an energy-absorbing collapsible steering column, originally patented by General Motors and introduced in 1967.

GM’s cars received the new safety feature before the trucks did. The energy-absorbing steering column was introduced as a standard safety feature on all 1973-onward model rounded-lines.

Other safety features included four-wheel hydraulic Hydra-Boost power assist self-adjusting brakes, tempered safety glass, six directional signal lamps with "lane departure" and four-way hazard functions, and the fuel tank(s) moved from within the cab to under the vehicle.

The Dodge pickups of the era still had their fuel tanks located within the cab.
