If this were the US, it'd be 1961 Dodge Dart, either Seneca or Pioneer. Since this is New Zealand, I think it would be a Dodge Phoenix or a DeSoto Diplomat. |

These wagons were usually imported to be used as hearses. Sometimes they were imported privately when a few years old. It is almost impossible to determine what it was originally by its appearance. This movie was filmed in the north. I knew of one of these here in the south which had been a hearse. It was a Seneca and had the little 170 cid slant six in it. It looked odd because at sometime in its life it had had a front end collision and the front panels had been replaced with 1960 items, so it had a double identity. Re the comment from Cougar Tim, we did not get the Dodge Phoenix here - that was built in Australia for Australia. I have only ever seen one 1961 De Soto Diplomat. Our regular Dodge sedans in 1961 were Pioneers - Canadian I think, with 313 V8s. They might have come from the US because I know that our Dodge Kingsways came from Detroit in the early to mid 1950s whereas our De Soto Diplomats came from Australia, and our Plymouth Savoys came from Canada. Only a very small number were imported, maybe only a few dozen. From 1962 we had Dart 330s. Once the Australian Valiant became available with a V8 - about 1966 - there were no more imports of Dodges. -- Last edit: 2012-04-23 10:50:39 |
