Jeremy says the Continental GT has conventional four-wheel drive, but in fact it does not. It uses a compact longitudinal transmission and axle (transaxle) setup. With this system, there is no need for a transfer box. The rear propeller shaft connects directly to the back of the transmission, like a normal rear-wheel drive car. The Bentley’s transaxle has a Torsen (TORque SENsitive) torque-biasing limited-slip centre differential. The Torsen centre differential is used to control the torque split between the front and rear wheels. It keeps the engine’s torque from making a bee-line to the wheel(s) with the least resistance (traction). The front and rear differentials are open (no limited-slip or locking), so four-wheel electronic traction control is employed to manage the torque coming from the Torsen center differential. Great episode though, sans the error about the four-wheel drive system. |
