In front of it an early 1960s Comet, on the right a late 1950s Lincoln Continental and a 1950 Pontiac |

The subject car looks more like a Mercury from here. 1965? |

Yeah, now that I look at it, it does look more like a mid-1960's full-size Mercury. -- Last edit: 2012-02-19 21:45:20 |

Did Mercury ever make a "police package" vehicle? Would this have been a California Highway Patrol car? |

That's not a Comet, it's a 1960 Chrysler. |

A few police departments bought Mercury's for a short while during the 1960's. It wouldn't surprise me if California was one of them since they bought some Oldsmobiles as well. I should've known all along this was a Mercury. Here's another '66 that I added to this site myself: /vehicle_460980-Mercury-Park-Lane-1966.html And another shot of it here: /vehicle_461011-Dodge-Charger-1966.html -- Last edit: 2012-02-22 04:33:42 |

So it is. I must have looked too quickly at it, this happens sometimes. |

Indeed, from 1958 until the early 80s. The last major department to use a Mercury was the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1981, and finding examples built after that is quite tricky. Though I believe the police package was available for a few more years afterwards, possibly for as long as the full size Mercury was built in St. Louis. In answer to your other question; the California Highway Patrol used a Mercury in one year, and only one year: 1970. So where ever this Montery came from, it was not a CHP car. |
