This is a Unipower Hannibal Series 12. It has a Gardner 5LW. The Forester was a different Unipower model that was powered by the Gardner 4LW. I was heavily involved with the restoration of the vehicle at my Yard in Aston Clinton. The Dashboard of this vevicle has a chromed badge that reads
Unipower Hannibal series 12. The Hannibal is the same wheelbase as the forester, but in order to accomodate the longer engine, the chassis is lengthened by approx 12 inches by a bolt on section. The vehicle was supplied new to Astell Brothers, Timber merchants, Bedford. The cast diff covers also help identify the Hannibal, generally the Forester has steel pressings for this part.

Did they also make large fire trucks in the eighties/nineties?

I ask as I have recently started making captures for something where an airport firetender licensed as a Unipower appears.

No idea - I'm getting my info from my one and only kit car book - Link to "www.amazon.co.uk" - which does not say much about other activities of the parent company Universal Power Drives. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Power_Drives suggests your idea is probable, especially after UPD were bought by Alvis in 94. Their other car venture alongside the GT was the Quasar Link to "www.thetruthaboutcars.com" .

Sandie,

Yes, sorry but I have only just come across this strand, having spotted the Unipower while looking at Albions.
Unipower made large military vehicles/fire appliances/bridge carriers and such. They were absorbed into the BL megalith, where IIRC, they were allied with Scammell, by then also being faded out, and eventually wound up as part of Alvis. Various Unipower products were assembled by Alvis Telford, and there was some crossover with Thomson Bridging at Ettingshall. A colleague and I went to Watford to do a check over the remains of Unipower in case of any outstanding commitments, and most of the commercial documentation ended up in a skip.

As a starting point for web research try "Bridging for the 90s".
