Actally, it is not a Series 3 at all, it started life as an ex-army Series 2A from abut 1964 or 1965 (I don't know the exact year). Like all Land Rovers released from Army use in the 1970's it got the registration letter current at the time it was first registered for civvy use, which in 1977 would be an R reg. Fred always considered his Land Rover a tool and as such didn't care if it was original or modified, so he fitted the Series 3 front end for improved lighting. Some time after this was filmed the Land Rover was fully refurbished onto a new chassis with a new Series 3 bulkhead and V8 engine (I know the firm that did the work). Apparently Fred grew to dislike the rebuilt Land Rover as it was very thirsty, far more tempremental and much harder to use for his steeplejack work than it had been before the rebuild when it had its orignal but very tired 2.25 litre 4 cylinder engine. |
