Used by the UN - where for what purpose?

Southern Lebanon?

If so its still operating today as the Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon until 31 August 2012.

"Established in 1978, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is tasked with ensuring that the area between the so-called Blue Line – separating Israel and Lebanon – and the Litani River is free of unauthorized weapons, personnel and assets. "

The UN doesn't own any military vehicles. Countries contributing soldiers to UN peacekeeping missions bring their own vehicles, so this Ferret would have gone home when the country that operated it withdrew Ferrets from service, if not before.

Now all we have to do is find out which countries contributed troops to UNIFIL in 1978 and, of those, which ones had Ferrets. :)

I'm nowhere near being an expert on the Ferret but I cannot match it to any Ferret pictures.

Looking at pictures on Google this looks more like an AML-90 I think.

Similar areas on the AML-90 indicated here....

"At least 52 AML-90s were delivered to the Lebanese Army in 1970-72,[6] and saw considerable action during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990)"

As these are UN not Lebanese Army vehicles...

"In 1978 14 [Panhard M3 VTT APC] were sent to Southern Lebanon (with four AML90's) for service with the Irish UN Contingent there."

Armoured fighting vehicles of the Irish Army (Wikipedia).

Panhard AML 90

The army ordered in 1970 20 AML 90 and 16 Panhard AML 60-7 HB armoured cars all of which were delivered by 1975. The AML 60s have been used on peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, the AML 90s in Lebanon and both the AML 20s and AML 90s in Liberia.

Any special features, what would justify a "made for IRL" or "made for UN"?

The barrel is too small for an AML 90, it's an AML 60.
