2009-2012 Ford Flex Limited (D471) Class is not Off-road / SUV, its not even a crossover SUV. Ford will tell you it’s simply a crossover (minus the SUV part), just a marking technique to convince people that it’s a stylish people mover. What Ford is/was really trying to do, is shake off the dreary minivan stigma that came with the Windstar, later renamed the Freestar. The Flex (D471) officially replaced the Freestar (V229) in 2008. The Ford Flex is basically a cross between a minivan and a station wagon, with more wagon DNA, than minivan DNA. This is also to help fight off the minivan stigma. It does have available all-wheel drive, delivering torque to all four wheels through a single-speed single range transfer unit; however, if the system becomes overheated, it can shut down for a cooling period. When this happens, the Flex runs as front-wheel drive. So no SUV off road capabilities to be found here. Just a people mover, or whatever Ford wants to call it. |
