Its a 1972 Chevy Malibu, Ryan Gosling (the star of Drive, who rebuilt and now actually own the car) said so himself.

How about actually having a car from the 80s?

'73 was first year for this generation.

It's been modified/repainted, so it's hard to tell if it's a lower trim level Chevelle or a higher Chevelle Malibu.

These headlights are though: after ramming in the rear and then the side of a Lincoln, they still work!

Supposedly, a 1970 Chevelle was going to be picked, but Gosling opted for his own choice, which was this.

Gosling was asked to choose his wheels, and, knowing nothing about cars, picked a '73 Chevy Malibu that cost $2,000 from a junkyard. “And I rebuilt it.” he grins. “I did everything on the car except the transmission.”

Is this kind of attention to detail important? Did he really need to rebuild a car from scratch? Or, in the case of Blue Valentine, spend ten years waiting to be a drunken blue-collar husband?

“It is,” he replies, “but it depends on the film. For instance, I don't know how much preparation actually makes its ways in obvious ways into a film. Fuck, I mean, someone else could have built a '73 Chevy Malibu and you'd never know the difference. My character never has to talk about cars or do anything underneath a car, so it doesn't really matter. But it felt important to me. And with every character you play, you have to find a way in. Sometimes it's hard, sometimes you can't really find the thing you need. But it's important to me.”

The car was left undented after ramming that sedan because screw logic.

When I saw this Malibu in this movie...I just remembered John Cusack’s (Lloyd Dobler) Malibu from “Say Anything” and that quote from that movie - “Dissed in the Malibu”😁. Maybe seeing that Malibu in the junkyard had Ryan Gosling having his own John Cusack moment.

My favorite year of the Chevelle, I never really like the 1968 to 1972 Chevelle's, unless it's an sedan or wagon.

Quote 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu
Chassis no. 1D37H3R412028
• Screen-used throughout Drive (2011) as one of only two hero cars driven by Ryan Gosling during principal photography
• One of just three Chevelles built for the production: one destroyed for stunt work, one retained by Ryan Gosling, and this example
• Authentic 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu powered by a 4.7-litre (290 cu in) V8 engine with automatic transmission
• Finished in the instantly recognisable primer-grey paint with factory-style silver wheels, chosen to reflect the Driver's understated, anonymous persona
• Extensively featured in the film's promotional materials and key driving sequences across Los Angeles
• Accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity signed by William "Billy" Powell (Transportation Department, Drive)
• Acquired by Movie Cars Central from a private collector in the United Kingdom, where it was displayed following the film's release

When the production of Drive (2011) began, Ryan Gosling was invited to choose a vehicle that would embody the quiet menace and mechanical precision of his character, known simply as "The Driver." The 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu became that car—a modest, slightly worn American muscle car that reflected the character's restraint and anonymity. Gosling is said to have personally helped prepare one of the film cars to better understand his role as a stunt driver and mechanic.
Three Chevelles were built for the production: one destroyed during stunt work, one retained by Gosling himself, and this example—used for hero driving and interior sequences. It appears in numerous scenes filmed around Los Angeles, including the film's haunting night drives and tense getaway moments. The car's interior remains unmistakable, with dashboard cracks that can be clearly matched to close-up shots of Gosling and Carey Mulligan on screen.
Retaining its production modifications, weathered primer-grey paint, and interior patina, this Chevelle remains exactly as it appeared on film—a tangible and evocative symbol of Nicolas Winding Refn's acclaimed neo-noir masterpiece.
Purchased by Movie Cars Central in January 2020 from a private collector in the United Kingdom, the car is accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity signed by William "Billy" Powell, its previous UK V5 title, expired US title, and several related props from the film.
While complete, the car would require mechanical recommissioning prior to road use.
