According to Hiace's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), 2005 Toyota Hiaces are not built in Thailand, but built in Japan. (Edit : I found that Hiace Commuters' VIN are start with "J".) -- Last edit: 2011-06-29 10:01:47 |

Then rather mistake is on Wikipedia Hiace seems to be exported to Thailand from 05.2006 from Malaysia (CKD in Shah Anam, Selangor): Link to "www.motortrader.com.my" Link to "paultan.org" Link to "ignition.my" |

Possible, but VIN of Hiace Commuters are start with "J", truly. (Import chassis and/or car parts from Japan to made vans in Thailand?) -- Last edit: 2011-06-29 10:04:27 |

I thought that the start of the VIN was depending on the make and not where it was built ![]() |

@antp I am not sure about the rest of the world but in cars sold here in the US the first digit of the VIN tells the country it was built. 1,4,5 =US Built 2= Canada 3= Mexico J= Japan |

Indeed you are right, it starts with the country. First three characters indicate country+maker actually, so a make with several assembly sites will get different codes depending on the country. |
