Rationing started in WW2, but items covered varied during and after war http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rationing_in_the_United_Kingdom . Apparently potato rationing began in 1947 - if this is what's going on here, it's a brilliant period snapshot. |

The shop in the photo is Steabben butchers, which is now an extension of the pub called The Eight Bells, and the shop on the right is Hankin and Son drapers, which closed in 1962 The scene, as it happens, is not in Brighton at all, but The Broadway, facing Fore Street in Hatfield. |
