It's either a Fury III or Gran Fury (probably with the 400 or 440 engine from the sound of it). The whole rear end's been jacked up too with air shocks and leaf spring shackles, which was the style in the 70's. Those rear wheels are Stockton Milner Chrome Reverse rims. The car also seems to have police spotlights.

he was a speed freak, after they flip the car clint eastwood says 'just another glass head like the rest of them'. he was probably screwed up on the fumes that were pouring into the car too.

as for the the raised suspension in the back being the style in the 70s, i wonder why they did that?

It looked racey, like a dragster. It also allows for clearance for fatter tires in the back, for better off-the-line traction.

On drag cars, it has the added benefit of reducing front lift by shifting the weight of the car forward. Front lift, however, is not a major concern on a street car...most street tires just don't get the kind of traction necessary to allow the car to do a wheelie.

I think it should be 4 stars, they use if for quite a long time until they get Goody's '51 Mercury.

One of the back wheels flies off when it rolls but they evidently managed to get it fixed...

driver is played by Bill McKinney who for a while always got type-cast playing crazy rednecks - ie Deliverance, he was a great '68 Charger driving redneck in Carquake too

Based on the interior door panel, it's a Fury III rather than a Gran Coupe.

What surprises me is that this rather odd treatment is on a relatively new car. Who puts air shocks and shackle extenders on a 73 plymouth with fenders that cover so much of the stock wheels? Wonder if they found this car or dressed it up so crazy for this film?

But who would do all this to a brand new car at the time? Movie came out in 73 and its a 73 car. Also how could that nut afford a new car? There had to be a lien on it. This is one of my favorites scenes of the movie along with the Trans Am and Riviera scenes. But I always struggled about the car being new at the time yet so modified.

Yes a brand new car to be exact.

One of the funniest clips of this movie..i watched on you tube a few times..cant get enough! Looks like they actually had fun filming this part too...as far as using a new car ...when it comes to hollywood, money is no object!! I have old cars we put in movies and when you see what they spend on stuff you realize that!!!

It came to me in a vision to clone this car. I love it. Hope to have the car done this year.
