Mater |

I think more to mixture of '55 and a '60 For me the roof is typical '60 with that roof over the front window |

Vu de face, elle me fait penser à 100% à un camion Dodge 1956 Et en voici un exemple http://www.classiccarprojects.com/htmlfiles/56_dodgtrk.html -- Last edit: 2006-06-21 18:51:47 |

If its a Chevy pickup, wouldn't it be either a 1 ton, 1/2 ton, 2 ton or Apache? It kind of looks like a 2 ton Apache. |

After looking at the pic, and from a knowledge that Larry the Cable Guy (Voice of Mater) has a Dodge truck in real life, I would guess its a 56 Dodge. |

He should have five stars. He has a big part in the movie |
◊ 2006-11-12 06:46 |
According to the Cars cast listing on Wikipedia, Maters a 50's Chevrolet, but I still think it looks more like a Dodge. |
◊ 2006-11-12 13:15 |
Movie is not about it That means 4 stars |
◊ 2006-11-12 18:04 |
This is where it gets weird, the definition for five stars is "the car is part of the movie" and that's no more true than here (although, if nothing else, Doc Hudson only has three stars, which seems a little low). |
◊ 2006-11-12 18:11 |
There are 10 cars part of the movie then for this one. The movie is about McQueen, so this one can get 5 stars. Other important ones get 4. I agree that Hudson should get 4. |

1956 Chevrolet Cameo |

cameo? come on man, its a silverado |
◊ 2006-11-24 23:34 |
the cameo resembles a lot, plus , they got oxided very easly and they were 100% transformable, so the tow was a normal option |

A Silverado, in 1956??? I dont think so. |

Wikipedia says this being a "1951 International Harvester L-170 "boom" truck with elements of a mid-1950s Chevrolet One-Ton Wrecker Tow Truck".. This picture's text is in finnish but you get the point there.. Link to "www.tekniikkatalous.fi" -- Last edit: 2009-03-10 01:42:20 |
◊ 2010-05-16 10:39 |
J'ai fini par trouver. A la base c'est un International Harvester L-170. |
◊ 2010-08-17 04:58 |
This is all subjective, because Mater is a fictional cartoon truck, but it appears that Mater is an amalgomation of 55-7 Chevy, and similar year International. The telling detail is the large removable headlight bezel that the Chevys do not have. The bezels on the Chevys are inset into the fender hood, while on Mater, they actually form a bit of a hood, but are not at all flush, rather they are added on, and protrude, just like on an International. -- Last edit: 2010-08-17 05:02:00 |
◊ 2010-12-21 07:54 |
Wikipedia says its a 1951 International with some Chevrolet elements mixed in. |

fleetwood75 ◊ 2012-01-22 07:52 |
Don't know if you can understand or read English, But Mater is definitely NOT a 1956 Dodge!!! He's a 1955 to 1957 Chevrolet or GMC tow truck. |
fleetwood75 ◊ 2012-03-12 07:40 |
Nope!!! That ain't a '56 Dodge!!! The '56 Dodge has a wrap around windshield, You're WAYYYYYYYY WROOOOOOOOONGGGGGGGG!!!! on that!!! Mater's cab looks like a late '50s/Early '60s international Harvester pickup, I take it that you've probably never even seen a '56 Dodge Pickup before, I strongly suggest that you do a Google Search on "1956 Dodge Pickup", |
fleetwood75 ◊ 2012-03-12 07:44 |
You got THAT right Baby!!! MATER RULES!!!!!!! YEEEEEEE-HAAAA!!!!!! GIT R DONE!!!!! GIT R DONE!!!!!!! GIT R DONE!!!!!!! YOU'RE A HERO MATER!!!!!! YOU ROCK MAN!!!!!! Mater displays a wealth of mechanical knowledge in "Cars 2", He rocks even more in that!!!!! I can't understand why so many people didn't like "Cars 2", I sure did!!!! |
fleetwood75 ◊ 2012-03-12 07:46 |
I wonder if Larry The Cable Guy ever drove a tow truck in real life. |
fleetwood75 ◊ 2012-03-12 07:56 |
Yeah!! A Silverado in '56 is COMPLETELY INCORRECT!!!!! That guy does NOT know his vehicles at all!!!! The Silverado first appeared in '75 as the top of the line trim level for Chevy C/K Pickups and Suburbans, Then in 2000, The full size Chevy Pickup was exclusively named Silverado, The same goes for GMC, The Sierra Grande & Sierra Classic trim levels cme out in '75, But GMC began calking it's full size pickups Sierra exclusively in '88. |
◊ 2014-12-19 14:10 |
With such wheel rims and grille, this is a medium-duty 4x00/6x00 model But indeed Mater is most likely a medium-duty truck... |
◊ 2015-09-14 11:08 |
His Tailgate/back bodies/tow equipment in Real Life Matter's tow equipment are exist. Different Chevy tow truck equiping the wrecker stuff, I believe that tailgate are the same tow stuff equiped by Matter. [Big possibility] Matter is more look like the 1957 Chevy with it tow equipment design. by the way, (regardless 1957 chevy is matter or not) matter's tow equipment is match with that tow equipment. * sorry the pict are too big. I cant resizing it by this code . Does anyone know usable resizing method in this IMCDb?? -- Last edit: 2015-09-14 11:59:03 |

I have a book called The Art of Cars, and the concept drawings of Mater show that he is indeed a 1955-57 Chevrolet tow truck. -- Last edit: 2018-02-28 18:36:02 |
◊ 2017-11-20 17:25 |
I have that book too. There was also a girl truck (his scrapped girlfriend? Pun not intended) which was a 1947-53 Chevy pickup. -- Last edit: 2017-11-20 17:25:54 |

For those wondering, this is the real truck that inspired Mater. It's pictured here in 2001 with Joe Ranft. (Co-Director, and voice of Red and the Peterbilt) The truck is specifically a 1951 International Harvester L-170 Interestingly, it's a boom truck and not a tow truck. It being used near mineshafts and other operations that required objects to be winched out of places. The hood of the truck was apparently found a quarter of a mile away from it, which seemingly carried over to Mater's design. It's supposedly still around as of 2023.
