Hammond drove it first then it broke down when the Stig tried to do a lap round the Top Gear track in it :p

Autocar (UK weekly magazine) has a driving report for 959 LRT in the current issue which was apparently problem-free - no mention of TG's antics or consequences. Owner is Andy wood but it's for sale - has Comfort spec and factory-fitted 525 bhp upgrade.

I'm definitely not a Porsche-fanatic, but as 130rapid stated, it was possibly the drivers' fault. I guess this car was just more than they could handle. On the other hand, the DVLA-report suggests the car's a collector-piece that has been in storage for most of its years. Cars that haven't been driven for many years often have their moods initially when they're being put into operation again. But as the Top Gear boys are actually rather (yellow-press)journalists and (excellent) entertainers than car-experts, I don't expect them to know that.

It's the best explanation!

The long resting cars need run-in period indeed, even when all hydraulics (brakes, shock absorbers) work well and liquids are fresh.
After few months of parking just the all cars always drive dizzy, groggy and noiser than usual at first ride.

In some way they must remember how to ride nice & quiet again. :D

With such sophisticated & powerfull car the TG team should do 1500-2000 km (at least) running-in distance, with the gradually growing strain, before any full-power test.

@ingo - if you're still looking for a UK-sourced car, this is coming up for auction at Bonhams in Chichester on 1 July - estimate £160-180,000. Surely your friends would be impressed when you tell them it's the actual car Top Gear broke on camera?

@dsl: sorry, but the fact, that it was to see at Top Gear, isn't interesting for my fellows and other car-freaks around here. This series runs in the German TV, but is indeed very unknown.

And with a Porsche 959 you will have the same problem as with an AC Cobra, a Ford GT 40 and a Lotus Seven - everyone will think, that it's a fake :o So you have to expect comments as "Uuuh, what an embarrassing spastic. Look, how he has cobbled plastic-junk around a rotten 911-clunker. Yuk!"
