Well, even if you never saw one in real, I guess that you know that these black taxis are London taxis (and so they are English...) |

Wasn't LTI called Carbodies back then? |
◊ 2007-01-28 17:53 |
Some I think could have been. Do you know any of the details? "Carbodies" have not currently been listed on IMCDb as a manufacturer so it would be of interest. |

IIRC Carbodies was renamed LTI in the late eighties or early nineties. Wikipedia says it acquired the rights to the FX4 in 1982, so this 1979 model would indeed be an Austin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Taxis_International |

Some of those that we listed as LTI were in fact registered as Carbodies (at least one, I remember that I have put a comment on that one) |

In doing some searching for any reliable information that could be found about Carbodies as a manufacturer I believe this is the best source. LTI themselves - under 'LTI History'. 1973, Carbodies was bought by Manganese Bronze Holdings plc. 1982, Carbodies took over the intellectual rights to the FX4 from British Leyland. 1984, Manganese Bronze bought Mann & Overton and a new company by the name of 'London Taxis International' was formed to manufacture and sell taxis. Therefore Taxis built between 1982 and 1984 are 'Carbodies'. Up to 1982 they are 'Austin', and after 1984 'LTI'. This is the way I propose we list them. Is anyone in agreement? The problem is that, in some cases, DVLA registration continued after 1984 with 'Carbodies' as manufacturer see this example. /vehicle_36081-LTI-FX4S.html E219 MYL Manufacturer CARBODIES Model TAXI/HIRE CAR Body type TAXI Colour BLACK Fuel type HEAVY OIL Date manufactured 30 December 1988 -- Last edit: 2007-01-28 19:18:35 |

Also: /vehicle.php?id=75899 I think that it would be easier to list them as LTI even if they are Carbodies, but when the year is sure we can use the right name... |

Agreed - I have no problem listing them all as LTI from 1982 onwards (even if some were possibly called Carbodies). Gag Halfrunt, Sorry I missed seeing your posts until now. It seems we were looking at the same information. -- Last edit: 2007-01-28 19:44:21 |

Come ti think of it, I'm pretty sure the LTI name didn't appear on taxis until well after 1984. Perhaps the company website is wrong. |

So the only thing that can be said is the 'LTI' badging was not used until sometime after the London Taxis International Company was formed as you said. austin-rover.co.uk says that 'LTI' badging was introduced with the FX4S in 1985. However the taxi model information from elitelondontaxis.co.uk says it was 'Carbodies' for the FX4S and FX4R Plus, following which from 1989 the Fairway and Fairway Driver were 'LTI' models. So without more specific information the naming remains as it is currently on IMCDb. They are all LTI once they were separated from the Austin brand. |
