Remember what people said on the Buffalo Soldiers page about American servicemen bringing their cars with them overseas? I think the base featured in this film is RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk which was used by the U.S. Air Force until it was closed in 1993. In the novel Bentwaters is the base, but in the film it is given a fictional name, RAF Baywaters, for some reason. The base contained nuclear weapons and was picketed by CND protesters (in the film), but in life I'm not sure if Bentwaters was really home to nuclear weapons, although RAF Lakenheath, which also in Suffolk, was the largest USAF base (along with RAF Mildenhall) in the UK, and definetely housed nuclear bombs. |

As far as I know, US servicemen's private cars have never had special plates in the UK, unlike in Germany. |

There are a few other American cars in this film, but only background glimpses. |

American soldiers number plates in Germany are almost identical to the standard German plates |

Almost is true. They have own combinations, starting with AD or AF (usual for cars, bought in Germany, German plate-size) and HK (in US-size on US-cars). Since a short time the MP has IF. And on the blue "Euro"-stripe on the left side of the plate, they have the NATO-symbol, not the EU-stars. -- Last edit: 2007-11-12 18:15:38 |
