Link to "de.wikipedia.org" From http://www.mercedesheritage.com/2009/905/ Two special variants In 1966 and 1967 two very special variants of the 300 SEL were built in Sindelfingen, never intended for series production and specially developed for the Vatican. In June 1966 a landaulet with normal wheelbase was built, which differed from the series saloon in that it had only a single seat at the rear and a landaulet soft-top that stretched to the front edge of the rear doors. Almost a year later, in May 1967, the landaulet was joined by two identical six-seater saloons, which were built on a floor assembly that had been lengthened by 650 millimetres and boasted modified rear doors as well as two folding seats in the rear. The landaulet was intended as a second vehicle for use alongside the Mercedes-Benz 600 by His Holiness himself, whereas the two Pullman saloons were to be used for transporting Vatican guests. -- Last edit: 2011-01-04 20:47:41 |

The other one has front wing indicators where this one has flags and has alloys. Perhaps the pope had secret boy-racer evenings in the vatican garage, or Merc updated the spec later. -- Last edit: 2011-01-04 20:55:03 |

Wikipedia says, that they are made by Mercedes Benz. And in the German Wiki-article about the W108 it's also written, that these two cars were partly armoured. Also visible is one "Holy Grail" for license-plate collectors, the S.C.V. 1. But if you think closer about that, it's just a mass-produced plate. There shall be always have been three different S.C.V. 1, also there were made some new for new Papamobile's. Anyways, Vaticane-plate are hard to get anyways. Prices for them -if authentic- are incredible high. Very annoying, this hysteria. Annoying insofar, that a Vaticane-plate won the prize "Plate of The Year" in 2009 at the German plate collector's club. And not the real "Holy Grail" (for Germany-collectors) Btw. Guess, who randomly has found and bought this Holy Grail |

@dsl: according Wikipedia, Mercedes Benz had made two W109-based Landaulets for the Pope. |

Is the Vaticane similar strict as some Eastern Block Nomenklatura were? Not buying cars (officially...) from unbelievers, resp. from countries with the wrong coordinate system? |

/vehicle_173970-Mercedes-Benz-ML-430-W163-2002.html should get the same label, doesn't it? |
