It appeared in September 1979 and was immediately available in Western Germany. I was there at the time to visit for the first and last time I.A.A. in Frankfurt (the Frankfurter auto show) and saw another new dark red Audi 100 in Nurnberg and another dark metallic green one running on an autobahn.
