Because they're pretty bomb-proof as a rule, and seeing that ol' three-pointed star on the end of the bonnet makes the driver feel good. I've seen this in the Balkans too - which is where old Mercedes go to die. -- Last edit: 2007-10-09 17:21:17 |

Old ones were quite reliable, capable of doing hundreds of thousands of kilometers. And an old luxury car stays a luxury car (i.e. comfortable) even if its price falls when it gets old. |

I've always thought Mercs were more majestic than BMWs (especially with older models), that's why I'd love to have a proper Merc one day. |

@ G-MANN: Quite a few do, yes, when they marry and outgrow the noisy (but not exceptionally fast) Hondas they had as kids. I actually live on the fringe of such an area in the Black Country, and Mercedes are certainly popular, getting bigger as they get older (or the families get larger), which prompted my comment on /vehicle_109646-Mercedes-Benz-190-W201-1983.html ... but as you suggest, when they move out to the suburbs they try to assimilate, and Mercs aren't any more common than among the community as a whole. Then they buy Jaguars or Bentleys, depending on how successful they've been. |

I remember Goodness Gracious Me mentioned owning 2nd hand Mercedes a couple of time, & featured a late 1980s Nissan Sunny as a typical British Asian car. Other favourites include larger Japanese cars, not just Lexus but the ones mainly made for the American "2nd car" market (ie Toyota Camry), & never that popular in the UK. Also plenty of cars featured in Gran Tourismo, the whole Subaru range, Mitubishi Evos etc. At one time I drove along Rusholme's "Curry Mile" & the surrounding area a lot, & this is mainly based on obervations from these journeys. |
