1979 VW Polo in standard trim. The colour is "Marsrot". A girlfriend of mine of the past had such a car in GT trim. |

The plate is much older than the car. |

In Belgium plates belong to the car owner, not to the car. So if you buy a new car, you can keep the old pates. |

I know, similar as in Switzerland. When you see today such an old-style Belgian plate, the car is always owned by old people. Looks a bit strange, a brand new car with an decades-old plates. So sad, that this is not possible in this way here ![]() |

You can still ask a new plate if you wish. Note that with the new plates, this will change: you'll be forced to change the plate when changing car. Also, an place could be inherited: in few case it can be a young driver which got it from his parents/grand parents. |

@ingo: I have my car plate transfered from my old car to the new car. I was really surprised that the state of Georgia still have my plate number in their file. After supplying the VIN number from my old car that I sold in 1999 and brought a new one in 2008 along with the new VIN with the new sticker the transfer was a breeze. So, the Georgia registration I have is currently being used on my new car and only costed me US $20 for the transfer ![]() |

It's a 1953-62 plate. Even smaller than the current plates of 34 cm (EU plates 52 cm). They didn't have pre-drilled holes, so they would make two holes in the middle and use rusty bolts -- always. |
