Were these sold officially in Sweden?

I think so. I Sweden there were all the years several more US-cars sold than in other European countries, perhaps except Switzerland.

In Germany GM started with the 1978/79 Caprice the most powerful try (and AFAIK the only one ever) to bring an US-car of this size into the market. I don't know, how many were sold, but sometimes I've seen some single Caprice's back then.

I wouldn't say they took kindly to the 5.0L and 5.7L engines!

Yes, they were sold as both optional V8 engine for sedan version. By SAE format, they delivered 130 and 170 horsepower respectfully.

Petrol must be cheap up there then.

Very few Yank cars have ever been sold here in Ireland (also we're a RHD country), All what we have/had here were Chrysler Voyager and Neon's. Buckets of shit they are.

It wasn't always thus. I visited Ireland as a teenager (1955, since you ask :) ) and all the taxis in Dublin, Cork and Killarney were Dodges, Hudsons and the like. CIE favoured US (or maybe Canadian) Fords.

We've always had lots of them, mostly the full-sizes though. The big dealers don't sell americans anymore except for the Daewoo Chevys and Voyagers, but there are alot of smaller dealers that focus on american cars.

@ Kazimann:
I think that during the years Chrysler was partially owned by Daimler (Daimler-Chrysler)a few of their models were sold in European countries that they normally wouldnt have been. Its unfortunate that the country of Henry Ford, the first country to offer private automobiles to ordinary people and not just the privaleged few, mostly sold its cheapest and most disposable cars in some of the great countries of Europe.
I think the Ford Focus is sold in Ireland, though I may be wrong. That car was such a huge hit in the European countries Ford brought it here to their home country, and its proven quite successful here as well.
My brother visited Britain a few years back and observed a dealership selling Cadillacs and Corvettes,so GM does sell small amounts of their most upscale products in that corner of the world.

Very, very small amounts. "Trying to sell" would perhaps be a better description.

@cko: yes, Mercedes Benz has tried to sell Chrysler's during their corporate times, but at least here in Germany they weren't popular. The PT Cruiser was the most common. The customers didn't like them and the Mercedes-people neither. It could never hold or just reach the Mercedes-quality-standards, so the most Mercedes-dealers were ashamed about it.

But there were some few independend Chrysler-dealers from pre-Mercedes times. I remember one in the town of Dortmund. He even could hold his shop during the Daimler-Chrysler-times. They have sold mostly the Neon and the Stratus, also the Voyager and some single Pick Up's.
From the late 80ies and early 90ies I remember only the Voyager and the LeBaron (mostly Convertibles) as US-Chryslers on German streets.
Since last year Dodge tries stronger to enter the market. Some Dodge's were sold before, mostly the Durango, I think. Plymouth was never sold here.

About US Ford's, sold here, I don't know much. I only know, that the Ford-dealer in our village ( http://www.autohaus-boewing.de/ )
seems to be a Mustang-freak, as he always shows a few of them and uses them as company-cars either. It looked a bit strange, his stand on a local classic car meeting three wees ago. He had decorated it with three 2010 Mustang's and one 1961 17 M [P3] Deutsch Convertible (which is not in really good shape, if you have a closer look).

US-GM-cars are to find here, but not really much. Cadillac didn't even has a German office, since a private dealer in the Düsseldorf-area get bankrupcy this year.
As a former school-friend, who works since 15 years for a big Opel-dealer in Hannover, has told me, it is possible to order US-GM-cars at the bigger Opel-dealers (that ones with the GM-logo on the roof). Usually they don't have them in the show-rooms and the brochures are not positioned in the holders, but direct, personal orders are possible.

P.S. sure, there are several classic US cars to find here, the German US Car-club's are quite big, too, but the majority of their cars are private imports, mainly from the USA, some from Sweden or Switzerland.

It depends on the $-€ exchange rate, if the USA-import or the USA-export of classic cars is bigger. When the $ was weak, as in the early/mid 90ies and the last ca.5 years, we were overflooded with US-imported cars, also with re-imported Europan classics.
No kidding, nowadays are more Porsche 356 running here, than ever before! Similar with 914, 911, Mercedes Pagoda's, W107, Karmann Ghia's, and British Roadsters.

Indeed we sell the Focus here, in fact, it's one of the best selling cars here, along with the Opel Astra and Nissan Micra.

We've started selling a few Caddy's here recently, although they're not popular at all. You're likely to see an American-spec Caddy here more so than a genuine Euro one.
