Previously listed as a Wolseley 6/90 which is a better fit for a police car rather than the four cylinder 15/50.

There is something not quite right about this car. The badge on the boot lid says 15/50 (in large characters which, I think, may only have been used on some of the last ones produced) but the chrome decoration on the side is that used on the Wolseley 4/44. The 15/50 had longer chrome trim and it was curved, not straight. Rather than a 15/50, I think that this is a 4/44 that has been fitted at some time with a replacement boot lid from a 15/50.

It must also have been fitted with a B series engine and twin spotlights instead of single as well as a new boot lid.

4/44 was 1250cc using the old Nuffield XP type engine out of the MG YB, and the 15/50 was introduced in June 1956.

MFN was a Canterbury series, June-Nov 1956 so the DVLA date of September for 480 looks genuine. Plate info says 15/50
Registration MFN 480
Make WOLSELEY
Model 15/50
... and it's been displayed as a 15/50 at classic events - https://www.flickr.com/photos/imagetaker1/2774677054 , http://nice-reg.co.uk/number-plates/a-z/M/MFN480.html . Comment here suggests MFN 480 has been used as a floating film plate (with USL 507 and BOA 430B) on a 1968 Oxford S6 (really PAD 124G) in a 2006 film called Sixty Six, but that does not mean it's dodgy here.

So in summary, we probably have a genuine 1956 15/50 on its original plates, but restored with the wrong side trim and the boot badge fitted from March 1958.

According to the Wolseley Owners Club, the first 1200 production units of the 15/50 did not have the rear door chrome strips, so as a Sept 1956 registered car, it is more likely that MFN480 is an early 15/50 rather than a late 4/44 with the wrong badge.

A couple of loose ends to tie up:

- can't find any reference for short side strip on first 1200 15/50s made, but if the OC says it, it must be solid. Total production listed as 12,353, so 10% would have short strip. After June 56 launch, about 145 were made by Oct 56 (according to a snapshot list of chassis numbers) so long strip probably happened from about Nov 56

The large character 15/50 boot badge in same style as 4/44 was the early format, changed at some point to a different double-decker smaller script saying Wolseley above 15/50. No date for changeover found, so no idea if it happened at same time as longer side trim.

However this all suggests the car is correct for an early 15/50 before late Autumn 56.
