Why list this (and all similar cars) as XJ40 when it was sold as XJ6 or XJ12?

'XJ40' was the development / chassis name. Similarly 'XJ27' was XJS Coupe and 'XJ77' was XJS convertible.

I suggest they should be re-listed as XJ6 series IV [XJ40].....(or XJ12 if its known that they were a V12)

not all of them on all markets were sold as XJ6 and XJ12 - XJ40 was also a model name.

Thanks Wickey. :)

I worked for Jaguar in Coventry up until Ford bought them and worked on the XJ40. But I know of no markets where they were sold as anything other than XJ6/12. Thats not so say its not possible. But certainly for the UK and Europe they were not sold as XJ40. Also I thought in the USA it was also only known as the XJ range. I can find no car bruchures that mention the XJ40 as a model name.

Do you have an example where they were actually sold as XJ40?

I don't have the answer, but if you do a google image search for Jaguar XJ40 you can get a pot full of pictures. That's not to say I trust google or Wikipedia too much but there they are :)

Sunbar >> I would agree with your suggestion as on wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_XJ ) they use "XJ40" as chassis code rather than "Series IV".
So I replace all "XJ40 [Series IV]" by "XJ [XJ40]" ?
By the way, I can set XJ27 and XJ77 for the XJS I guess?

Yes thats right.

'XJ27' was the XJS coupe, all model years.

'XJ77' was the XJS convertible made by Jaguar at Browns Lane Coventry from 1988 onwards. This was developed in conjunction with Karmann in Germany who also manufactured the tooling that was shipped to the UK.

'XJ27' would also have applied to the first convertibles as these were conversions carried out by Tickford on the Coupe made in the UK from about 1985 to 1987. On these there was still a fixed roll-over bar behind the driver to retain the strength of the chassis and looked quite different to the full convertible.

'XJ41' never made it to production as it was supposed to be the successor to the E-type (called by some the F-type but never officially named by Jaguar). It also was developed in conjuction with Karmann but went over-budget and was cancelled just before Ford bought the company.

OK, I made the change :)
By the way, there are few XJ sedan (with picture) that are missing their chassis-code. I can't recognize them so I let that for Wickey :D

Thanks. :)

The car I've been longing to find is the Jaguar XJ6C (I think it was series II). It was a two-door hardtop version of the XJ sedan. Quite rare, but there must be one in a movie somewhere.

I can only tell from my experiences - my father used to have XJ40 and in registration was written as type XJ40. Check also these out: Link to "www.amazon.co.uk" :)

But I must agree, that I can not recall if I saw on car directly badge saying XJ40.. Anyway using XJ [XJ40] is a good compromise :)

The Amazon link is not a proof: you find books with the Mercedes-Benz W-codes as titles, though these codes were never used as model names.

Patrick Macnee (John Steed) drives a Broadspeed version of the coupe in The New Avengers. The Coupe was a Series 1 btw and it is believed that no more than ca. 800 were made.

Junkman, great, I will look out for it.

There was a white one very close to where I live. A non-runner and very rusty, I guess it no longer exists.

The car in the 1st thumbnail is an older XJ, looks like a Series II.

Deja vu... 1988 was the correct first year in the USA.

Sovereign model was only 1990-92, but it's not really possible to say it is a Sovereign rather than a US XJ6 as they had similar trim unlike in Europe. It's not a 1993-94 model.
