1982-85 due to the Ford oval and lack of CHMSL.

Sorry, but no. The 1982-85 had smaller taillights and upright turn indicators/back-up lights.These larger taillights with longer, wider turn/backup lights were used from 1986-88.The Ford oval remained in that location well into the 1989 restyle.This is a 1986 design for sure.

officially these were released as 1985.5 models to get these tail lights, and the 1986 model would have had the CHMSL. i would say this is a half year model (only) - a late 1985...

@an_unusual_eye: I have seen such 1985.5 version on the road years ago. There may be 1985.5 Ford Escort/Mercury Lynx with composite headlight and no CHMSL out there...

which leaves it up to the powers that be to decide if a 1985.5 model that isn't the same as a 1985, but also isn't quite the same as the 1986, gets listed as a 1985 or a 1986 model.

:p

i vote for .5 year models as needed... it could be applied to the 1974.5 datsun 260z, and the 1986.5 Toyota Supra ~ two of my personal "favorites", among many others of course.

The problem with the ½ year models is that officially they don't exist, There are no VIN's that have XXXX.5 as the year. Originally I had assumed that all ½ year models would be rounded up to the next year by the manufacturer (i.e. all 1964½ Mustangs are officially 1965s) but this isn't always the case as I have found out I have owned 2 1995½ Isuzu Troopers, one was built in April of 1995 and it was registered as a 1995 by the VIN number and the other was built in May of 1995 and it was registered as a 1996. I have also seen a lot of 1988½ Suzuki Samurais with VINs indicating that they are 1988 and 1989 models so I guess it is just all up to the manufacturer as to when they introduce the mid year changes.

As far as the car in the picture with no CHMSL it has to be registered as a 1985 or it wouldn't have been allowed on the road in the US

a VERY good point about the CHMSL forcing a 1985 registration on this one. the .5 situation is pretty complicated in general. the 1974.5 260z cars that i mentioned before were all officially 1974 models according to Nissan/Datsun, as for 1975 in the USA, the only officially offered S30 model was the 280z. there must have been some latitude, however - at least in certain states - based on how and when they were registered, as i once "knew" an A-Title U.S. spec. 260z that was titled as a 1975... a car that never officially existed on any Nissan certificate of origin. - all just part of the fun.

@an_unusual_eye:
@tonkaTRACKER:

We can officially listed this as 1985 based on integer rule on IMCDb page with a few exception (i.e. 1965 Ford Mustang as we know of). We can always comment half year on the said page.
