This car belonged to garbage company boss Dick Barone (whose business is one of the mob's front's) and it appeared in episode 1.1 "The Sopranos" (Pilot).

It's the pre-face lift version (the nicest looking in my opinion) - so it could be a 500SL. In 1994, the entire Mercedes-Benz model naming convention changed - ex. the 500SL became SL500, and so on. In `94-`95 the front turn-signals went clear. This is the older version. So from this view alone, it could either be a `90-`93 300SL or 500SL.

I know this is an SL500 because you see him drive off and you see the SL500 badge.

This is extremely blurry (I can see it clearer on my DVD player with it's zoom function) but you can just about tell that there are two letters I front of three numbers. I'm pretty sure those numbers are 500.

But then it could be possible that the original model badge on the boot came off and an "SL 500" badge was stuck on instead of a "500 SL" badge.

That can be the case for all cars then, we can rely on the badge if nothing indicates some other year/model.

Is this definetely the pre-facelift version? To me the later R129 models look pretty similar to the earlier ones.

So how come it has an SL500 badge on the boot?

As you suggested earlier, the badge was replaced (either because it was lost, or because he wanted to make like if he had the latest model). Or they replaced the whole trunk.

Nope that is incorrect. The badge isn't replaced and likely is a 1994 SL500. I'm not sure why this was debated 6-7 years ago, but it's definitely a 1994 model due to naming and amber turn signals. The renaming took place in mid-to-late 1993 on various models for the 1994 model year, with the SL receiving standard clear indicators in late 1994 for model year 1995.
