the sad biker ◊ 2019-09-20 22:17	Don't know about Germany but here in the UK you saved tokens from the petrol station (Esso) for a tiger's tail (put a tiger in your tank). A late 60's/early 70's thing. I cannot remember Esso tokens, but some from Shell. Mainly vintage cars, the only actual model I remember, was the Fiat Dino. But those tokens were before the time, I was old enough to become interested in cars (although this was very very early. With five years I knew the common car models and I even could read license plate - which was very bewildering for my parents.

The first time I recall seeing it in any situation was in the Donald Duck short "Wet Paint" from 1946. According to this thread - it may have begun as some sort of a roadkill leftover "trophy" back in the 1930s that for whatever reason caught on.

My dad collected the tumblers. World Cup coins was Esso - bizarrely I got a Glenn Hoddle in my change a couple of weeks ago - pretty much same size as a modern 10p. Mobil did some collectors cards and an album - I think for racing cars. Mobil and Shell did various cheaply made model cars - some 1980s Corgis, and others from eg Maisto - Shell had a 1990s collection with unusual stuff like the MGR V8 and Lotus Elan [M90]
