This appears to be a 1950 Mercury because it has a 50 grill. |

This car was known as Hell's Chariot, it was 'played' by two Mercs a 1949 and a 1950, both started out as coupes and had their roofs cut off for the movie steel bars were welded across the rear seat area for strengthening. |

Pretty interesting paint job. that would be a horrible family car. "hay son! (dad drives up to garage and son is right next to the car and then "slash", right in the knee cap!). |

This car (or one of the two) was later used as background dressing in the film, Used Cars. There's a picture of it in that movie on this site. |

I just saw this on cars.tv. It is said to be the last surviving car from the film. Link to "www.mecum.com" |

^ It's not the last surviving car from the film. The original red Greased Lightning movie car is now displayed at Volo Auto Museum of Volo, Illinois. |

My dad worked for Tom Sparks for many years and they did a lot of work with Paramont Studios. My dad bought one of the two Mercurys from the studio. He bought the true 1950 convertible from the Paramount studios transportation department for $2000 in 1980. The 49 had been wrecked in the riverbed scene where they jumped the riverbed and it was the stunt car. The 49’ was a cropped car and was made to look like the 50’. Both cars were up for auction, but the 49 did not sell because it was wrecked & cropped and nobody wanted it. After my dad bought the car, he painted it burgundy and put on the bright work again. He rented it back to the studio, and it was the main car in a Julia Roberts movie called Baja Oklahoma. I drove the car in 1997 for my wedding, and then it was sold to a private collector in central California. |
