An Australian-built, 1954 De Soto Diplomat?

Seems unlikely to be Australian, unless the Australian plant made LHD models for export. Traffic in Tahiti drives on the right.

Are you certain it has left hand drive? I think they also built Diplomats in the Belgian plant so maybe that is where it came from. I have seen earlier Diplomats (1951/2 models)here in NZ which clearly have window glass supplied from Belgium and lead the owners to suspect they were built there. Oddly enough, the Dodge Kingsway equivalents of these that I have seen were built in Detroit.

It is a 1954 DeSoto Diplomat DeLuxe four door sedan ( SP-25-2).It indeed appears to have left hand drive. Left hand drive DeSoto Diplomats were build in the Belgian Antwerp assembly plant.Australian right hand drive Diplomats were sourced locally. Many Diplomats were exported outside Europe to african and central/south American territories and there are still a fair number of them in Cuba. The engine was still the 217.8 CID whereas later 1954 Plymouths had an enlarged 230.2 CID.
There were 3 finition models :the SP 25-1 , 25-2, and 25-3 corresponding to Plymouth's Plaza, Savoy, and Belvedere

My grandfather owned an Australian one of these from 1958 to about 1970. I drove it quite a bit after I got my drivers licence in 1967. It was dated 1956 - even though it had the 1954 shape. I think the Australians may have built them for several years. The same body shell was used for the Chrysler Royal which was still being built in the early 1960s. Our DeSoto had the 230 cid six and was a Diplomat Custom - so may have been an SP25-3? I still have the owners manual for it and it gives the optional engine as the 250 cid six which has a bigger bore but much shorter stroke than the 230.
