@Neptune and G-Mann: this is a REAL off-road-car. ;)
And located there, where you have a real use for it.

I bet my little Suzuki will go everywhere this Rover will ;)

Eeeh, maybe not really. ;)
For example the people in Namibia, I was talking with about cars, have all said, that Land-Rover and Land Cruiser are real usable off-roaders, Unimog and Patrol, too. Suzuki's they are seeing as toys for teenies, just usable for playing a bit offroad on beaches. :p

Well I hate to say it but this Land Rover is not even a REAL off roader. It merely possesses more off road capability
than other factory 4x4s. This one is not even factory stock. It has had several non-Land Rover off road equipment
upgrades (aftermarket) to help it better cope with it's environment.

Real 4x4s are vehicles that are custom designed from the ground-up for dedicated off road use (so much so that they are
not on road legal or barely just, and do not resemble vehicles as we know them)
Such as this vehicle: /vehicle_82332-Custom-Made--Sniper-.html

And besides, my Expedition (for what it lacks in off road capability, it more than makes up for in payload
and towing capability) it could effortlessly tow this Land Rover to any location should the need arise.
It would not even notice that it had load coupled behind it.

yes I hear a lot about how my little Suzuki is not very off-road capable and how it is, as they call it in Britian a "Hair Dressers Car" but that is until people see mine in action...I must admit that all of mine are modified and not stock but I have taken them places that no one thought it would come out of:

Here are my main two off-roaders:

1991 GMC Tracker at Uwharrie National Forrest (with my Sister's Suzuki Samurai:

1991 Geo Tracker:

and my newest toy is this LWB so my family could wheel with me, 1991 Suzuki Sidekick:

I like the flat-black one with the safari rack ...

Thanks Neptune, It was one of my favorites also as the 2 door "tintop" trucks are harder to come by here, it was a lot milder as far as modifications but would still do every trail at Uwharrie, sadly I sold that one and it now resides in Costa Rica

Here it is with the red one and my Liberty:

a side note the flat black one is a Geo though it is wearing the grille of my GMC Tracker.

It seems, that we have a different opinion about the question, what is a real off-roader. Sorry, but for me the vehicle in the link is just a useless and idiotic toy, not a real car at all.

I have the "classic" view on it. For me a real 4x4-Offroader in the historic meaning is something really usable, like the Land-Rover above. A car, which you can take for long-time- and long-distance-travelling, like passing Siberia, the Sahara or the Atacama-Desert. A car with load capacitity and robust technic, which works at any temperature and which you can repair with a hammer by yourself alone in the desert. A car, which survives the hardest weather and the hardest using for more many years and not only for just a bit playing in the mud.

The Land Rover is still probably the world's most instantly recognizable offroad vehicle, after the Jeep. While these Geo's and Suzuki's and other smallish offroaders do pack a punch and are capable of much more than what people give them credit for, they still haven't cemented themselves in the public's mind the way Land Rover and Jeep have.

This is mainly due to the fact Land Rovers and Jeeps have been around longer and have spent more time in film and television being depicted in South American and African (etc.) locales. They both were also originally marketed as tough workhorse vehicles, and, in the Jeep's case, were born from military hardware. I don't know much about the history of the Geo Tracker or Suzuki Samurai, but their overall aesthetic tells me they're marketed primarily as "urban" type vehicles, offroad capabilities aside.

I, myself, prefer Land Rover and Jeep to Geo and Suzuki because I gotta agree. Whether they can outperform the British and American vehicles aside, they just look like toys. When I look at them, Barbie Dolls are the first thing that come to my mind (my niece has a pink one for her dolls). Also in my honest opinion their wheelbases are just too short. All in all, they just don't look the part to me.

So, I have to side with Ingo on this one. Even if all I myself would do with a Landy is, well, play in the mud with it. :)

Lets not beat about the bush here. The Geo and Suzuki are the same car. Here in the UK they are known as the Vitara and they are almost universally recognised as being less capable than the more utilitarian SJ (Samurai) because they are designed to be primarily a road car with off road capability. The SJ, Jeep (CJ at least) and Land Rover Series/Defender were all designed as dual purpose vehicles to give good performance off road combined with reasonable performance on road. In terms of out of the box off road performance, the Defender will wipe the floor with any Suzuki (SJ excepted) or Jeep (CJ excepted). Even today a very large proportion of Defender sales are for commercial models working off road in quarries, on farms, on construction sites, in forrests and so on. I don't think Jeep or Suzuki even have commercial models any more. And don't underestimate the abilities of the Land Rover in this movie. It might have a small engine, crude suspension and there are no fancy gadgets like diff locks, big tyres, suspention lifts, but it will still get you where you need to go over some pretty serious terrain.

Getting back to the Land Rover in this movie, its actually a Series 3 judging by the plastic radiator grille and windscreen hinges.
