No, that's still a blue plate in the main pic, it's just a bit shaded. But the numbers are different. Note that the state name is covered up (why, I don't know), but they're clearly the plates used in California at the time. |

Numbers/letters placed in exact middle of plate says tv prop. Placement of letters/numbers is lower on real Calif. plates. I don't know how to link a screen shot from Knight Rider(82-86), but there is a Caddy with electrical tape covering the Calif. script that's pathetic. |

Real or not, these are clearly California plates or plate replicas. The front plate even appears to have the electrical tape cover over the state name. |

That does seem odd they would leave a real California plate on for that shot. I am surprised the car was even registered with plates at all as the car would have been delivered to the studio new and not registered until they sold it, but California did change to the blue plate in 1970 using three numbers and three letters and the numbers you can see do look real. |

A lot of studio program cars had real California license plates, and sometimes manufacturer plates. They weren't just used on camera, but sometimes for production assistance. They were usually registered to a regional office of the car company. Sometimes the prop or transportation guy would switch them or alter them, and other times they'd just leave them in place. |

I think the reason why the "California" was concealed by electrical tape was because, even though it seemed apparent, the actual location of where the Brady Bunch lived was never mentioned. I suppose that by eliminating explicit mention of a city and state made it more "relatable" to viewers across our country. For instance, viewers on the East Coast (including myself), viewers in the South, and in the midwest might have unconscious bias against watching the show if the location was clearly mentioned. Since the show focused on the family, the actual location was not really relavent. The family was meant to be relatable to the general public middle America. When there were only three channels, TV shows were created to appeal to as many people as possible to get high ratings and high advertising revenue. These days, shows are very specialized and to a target audience because there are so many channels to begin with, not to mention streaming services, and every other bit of entertainment that vies for views. But as you may see by my nauseating level of familiarity with the show, there wasn't much choice in TV (even reruns when I watched this ad naseum). |
