'69-'73 AMC Ambassador. I heard people hated this model back in the 70's. What was so bad about them? I imagine today they are pretty rare. |

Appears to be a 1969, since I can just see the "Ambassador" nameplate in the top left of the grille. I was around when these cars were new as a car-crazy kid. They were not "hated". The reason AMC and the other independents failed was because they were not big enough to enjoy the same economies of scale as the larger producers. They also suffered more under government regulations because they had fewer vehicles over which to amortize the new and costly requirements. |

Well I remember looking at a book (forget the name of it) but it was about bad cars. It had the AMC Ambassador in it. I remember a '74 model was the example shown. I dunno where Authors for those kinds of books get their info from, but they can't be too bad of a car if Police Departments used them. I was also shocked to see the early 70's fuselage style Imperial in another one of these kinds of books. |

At times it seems like certain writers just think about cars they do not like and proceed to vilify them as if there was something inherently wrong with them. AMC made good, dependable products but the smaller manufacturers just could not compete in a rapidly changing global market, saddled with burdensome government regulatory requirements. |

The Ambassador was dropped when fuel prices made cars of that size hard to sell. |
