I always wondered if it was correct for this to be listed as an E500 (no badge on the back) but I just did a search and found these two articles:

I suppose Mercedes would have wanted something a bit better than a bog standard 2 litre model featured in the film.

G-Mann's link say it's a '03.

But this was filmed in late 2001.

Good point G-Mann. So they were preproduction units, I guess you can call the movie units '02s. '03 was the 1st model year for North America.

I prefer the station wagon version of that car.

In fact, it was the "ultimate preproduction".
Mercedes Build one car by hand, the new generation was supposed to premier in that movie.
Up to that point, no one was supposed to know how the new generation looks.
But, while filming on location in New York, the crew either failed to keep people off the set, or forgot to close a tent.
Either way, a tourist took photos of the car (at least the front), and sold them to a german car-magazine.
Mercedes became really mad, and tried to sue the producing company (unsucessfull).

To this day, that incident is called the "easiest shot" of a secret car in history.
