:wow: They have to hand crank this 1976 Citroën Ami(!)

(Clarkson: "In 1977 you couldn't drink the water in France and they hadn't heard of an ignition key.")

Of course these cars had an ignition key (the 1951 2CV was the last Citroën car with no ignition key), but indeed, once you switch on the ignition by this key you could start the engine by hand crank (like my 1990 2CV). But there was no need to do so, only when the electric starter was broken down or when the battery was too low.

What was the newest French car, which was delivered with a hand-crank? Perhaps the Peugeot 305? Hadn't all French cars until the 70ies one included? The Peugeot 504 had one, am I right? And the Renault 4 until the end of production in 1990, too.

Dunno... The Renault 4 lost the possibility to use the hand crank in 1972 (when the whole in the front bumper disappeared... And our 1957 Panhard has no hand crank possibility (which was problem when the starter broke down, two years ago; but we were happy to find a good one in an old village garage in the south-west of France :) ) The Dauphine has one, though; quite funny to crank the engine from behind the car. And DS's have it: that's why there's a whole in the front license plate (which is illegal in Holland, so here we have to take off the license plate...). I guess the Peugeot 204 didn't have it, because its engine was transversal.

Ok, send your complaints to Top Gear, Mike. :D

By the way that instrument panel surely belongs to the Lanchester. That must be a mistake in editing.

Note that they retrofitted the headlights, it has white headlights when they buy it. Which is strange since it's probably a French import. (LHD)

:D
Yellow headlight glasses were not very common in France, where they used to use yellow bulbs. You see these yellow glasses rather in England. And to got an MOT, the car has to have UK glasses (wich are mirrored in their asymmetry).
