Registration is 1963-4 Coventry plate in sequence used by Rootes for factory cars (eg press, competition, staff cars etc). This is probably therefore a 1963 or 1964 works rally car and would have been a Hillman, as Sunbeam Imps only appeared from 1966. |

Works Hillman Imp '4525 KV' Coventry May 1963 Monte Carlo Rally 1964 Driver: Frostic. According to http://www.imps4ever.info/racing/rallies/compete.html Des O'Dell the Competition Manager wanted the Hillman Imp produced with a bigger engine, these were made 'unofficially' without management approval. -- Last edit: 2010-06-17 18:19:49 |

Originally a May 1963 registered car and used as above for 1964 Monte Carlo entry #32, for Michael Frostick/Gerry Burgess, as standard Hillman Imp 875cc 4525 KV. Successfully finished, but final position uncertain. 4525 KV stayed in use as works car until end of 66 season, with upgrading to 998cc Hillman Rallye Imp, and appeared in 1965 Monte #95 as this footage driven by David Pollard/Barry Hughes, finished 15th. Michael Frostick was 1960s rally driver, later author of several motoring books and a TV presenter for 1960s/70s BBC car programmes such as Wheelbase and the initial sensible incarnation of Top Gear. -- Last edit: 2013-01-21 05:16:31 |
