1970-71 as its 'J' registered so 'Mini' was the brand rather than Morris or Austin (from 1969?). edit: Motorbase.com refers to the Mk.III Cooper S lasting until 1971 despite the introduction of the flat-fronted Mini Clubman range in 1969. Could this be a 1970 Mini Cooper 'S' [ADO20]? -- Last edit: 2009-07-13 12:24:49 |

Agree, all the more as this Mini seems to wear a very MKIII Bronze Yellow, and last S were one tone only |

Not a works car. Agree 1970-71 Cooper S; probably RAC rally footage. Various private Minis competed in 1971-75 events, usually but not always with Clubman fronts. |

Looks like this is 1971 RAC, from this discussion about The Who apparently sponsoring rally cars (top comment and a couple from previous page) "The Who actually sponsored a rally Mini in the early 70s, I've a picture of it with their logo on the side, can't be that one can it? I'll have a look" "You'd have to re-watch "From Harrogate it Started" to check whether Stan Griffin's Mini was carrying an advert for The Who on the 71 RAC. He features in a longish sequence (filmed on the Woburn stage?) being caught and overtaken by Timo Makinen's works Escort that was running well down the field after gear selection problems. I wouldn't have thought it was the same car, as going into the RAC with a tired shell in those days was problematical (although 71, last of the "real" RAC rallies of 5 days with 1 night in bed, was snowy and wet, so less damaging than normal). The Who funded a works spec Escort for Stan in 73 (full spec except it had an iron block BDA rather than the then newish alloy block). They also sponsored the Penmachno stage of the 73 Welsh Rally and were said to have been at the stage start (they weren't when I started the stage!), although that may have been just Moon, who was the rally enthusiast. Can't recall the exact timing but Moon soon drifted on to planet drug and Stan must have sold the car. He then appeared in a Group One Escort RS2000 Mk1, presumably his own car (with the standard light blue/dark blue stripe colour and no advertising)." "Looks like it was Stan Griffin/Chris Dickenson in a Mini Cooper 998 registered GMV 350J. The registration is from July 1971 but the car has external hinges and a Mk 2 Cooper grille. So Mk2 Cooper, if a dark badge = Austin. |
