This is a World War 1 era Peerless truck. Apparently the British military bought about 12,000 Peerless truck chassis and used them during the war. After the war the surviving ones were rebuilt and sold for commercial use. This happened with thousands of truck at this time which stalled development in the British truck building industry. Link to "forums.aaca.org" If the registration plate is genuine our plate experts might be able to determine when and where it was registered. |

"AR" followed by the numbers 1 to 9999 is a Hertfordshire issue which would have started in 1903. When these ran out, the issuing authorities would have added a third letter as a prefix, so AR 9999 would have been followed by AAR 1, then AAR 999 by BAR 1 etc. The plate therefore could be genuine, but the first three letter registrations did not appear until July 1932. However Hertfordshire was also given the letters "JH" "RO" and "UR" so there could have been a large gap between AR 9999 and AAR 1. I would suggest that it is a fair guess that the truck in the picture was registered in the early 1920s, which would fit in with what NZC has said. On 1st January 1974 "AR" was transferred to Chelmsford, which is in Essex, and in the September 2001 reorganisation of the registration system it became a mark allocated by Norwich, which is in Norfolk. If you think this system is mad, how much madder am I for knowing this stuff! -- Last edit: 2009-06-08 21:35:42 |
