The opening front is an optical illusion provided by the rather dark picture. On the picture you see two landing vehicle tanks used by the US Marine Corps entering the beach. Those are FMC AAV7P1 (Assault Amphibian Vehicle), with gun towers. Their brother is the LVT P7 (Landing Vehicle, Tracked). Produced by the FMC Corporation in 1983 these vehicles were at first known as LVTP7 (Landing Vehicle, Tracked) until in 1985 the US Marine Corps changed the designation to AAVP7A1 (Assault Amphibian Vehicle Personnel). Only the name was changed, nothing else. In 1998 the vehicles were upgraded with a new engine and running gear and since called AAVP7A1 (RAM/RS). That is the version we see here. |

I remember having inserted a space after "AAV" because on the linked page they use that separately from the 7P1. If at the same time you added "(RAM/RS)" your change may have been lost. But why put that between "(...)" ? |

The brackets are actually being used by the military people. That are acronyms that resulted from the "reliability, availability, and maintainability upgrade" (RAM) and the "rebuild to standard" (RS) retrofit. If it were only a change in some nuts and bolts it would not matter, but with this upgrade the tank got a whole new running gear. If you look closely you can see the track support rollers which were not used on the older version. Therefore I think it is okay to give this long name and the new year. |
