Does anyone know what those letters under the XJ12 badge on the back say?

From the 1982 brochure....

"Introduction of XJ12 H.E."

'H.E.' standing for the new 'high efficiency' engine

"A range of new colours and trims marks the introduction of the new HE saloons.
On the boot panel the HE badge replaces the previous '5.3' designation and chrome side moulding enhances the waist line."

Car in the movie is a 1985-86 registration. From the brochure pictures, the new 'chrome side moulding' on the waist line is not easily visible, also for the movie car any added chrome is not apparent.

Chrome mouldings were only fitted to the Daimler models in the Uk & possibly the US spec Vanden plas models.

Daimlers arent sold in America, the closest thing to it would be the Vanden plas models.

Our Daimlers are differentiated from normal Jaguars by having wavey top grilles & boot plynths, the side chrome mouldings, stainless glass surrounds, internally they have individual rear seats, picnic tables mounted in the rear of the front seats for rear passengers, unique hand stiched leather [full leather, jaguars have leather combined with vinyl] & deeper walnut trim. They also have full options. Mechanically they are the same as the Jaguars but only come with the bigger engines [i.e. 4.2 & 5.3 only, not the 2.8 or 3.4].

The one in the advertisement hasnt got chrome side mouldings by the look of it, only the hand painted single gold stripe.

I actually saw the Range Rover with this plate yesterday in a caravan storage park near my house! Sad of me to remember this plate number, I know [:kiki] It looked it had been modified for proper offroading, it had it's bumpers and other bits stripped off.

Although it belongs to the main character Archie Leach (John Cleese) it doesn't really get that much use. Early on he's shown driving off in it after he meets Wanda (leaving his briefcase on the roof) and at end of the film he and Wanda go to Ken's place in it (talking for a bit while driving along) Otto steals it and takes Wanda to Heathrow (he's just shown driving off and then arriving there, parking it on the pavement right in front of a main entrance doorway) Apart from that it only appears in 1 or 2 scenes, very minor use (eg. one scene Archie calls Wanda using his carphone to break up with her)

We could give it 4 stars for belonging to the main character and being somewhat memorable (it's involved in several gags) but I'm not sure it's quite 4 stars in terms of screentime. I always thought it was a nice choice of car for the character (a very English, upper-middle-class barrister) Originally I did give it 4 stars then a while later I decided to downgrade it.
