This was archive news footage of the immediate aftermath of the murder of Raymond "Ray Chuck" Bennett who was allegedly shot by a disguised gunman on the courtroom steps in the lobby of the Melbourne Magistrate Court across from the former City Police Headquarters on Russell Street, Melbourne on the morning of the 12th November 1979.

After shooting Bennett, the gunman made his escape through a hole cut out of the fence in the police garage located at the back of the courthouse.

It is theorized that the gunman was working with someone who worked at the courthouse as a either a caretaker or a gardener who had gotten the layout of the garage and had cut out the hole for the gunman's escape.

The theory of the gunman working with a accomplice was based on eyewitnesses' descriptions of an unknown male who had been sighted in the police garage in the days leading up to Bennett's murder.

It was even suspected that Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Brian "The Skull" Murphy was the gunman.

Prior to the Great Bookie Robbery, Bennett had repeatedly threaten to kill Detective Sergeant Murphy on multiple occasion after Bennett had accused Murphy of "man-handling" Bennett's infant son during Murphy's visit to Bennett's home.

The theory of Detective Sergeant Murphy being Bennett's killer was based on the description of gunman given by eyewitnesses who were in the courthouse at the moment when Bennett was shot.

Witnesses had described the gunman wearing a fake beard and gold-rim glasses, during his career with the Victoria Police, Detective Sergeant Murphy had been on numerous undercover investigations, during he which he had wore a number of disguises.

On one of his undercover investigations, Detective Sergeant Murphy had worn a disguise that was similar to the description of the gunman.

Others suspected that the killer was Brian Kane, in revenge for Les Kane's murder.

After Bennett's murder, his friends, Vinnie Mikkelsen and Laurie Prendergast went into hiding, fearing that they would be next.

Before he went into hiding, Mikkelsen sold his Mazda hatchback sedan (bearing Victoria Registration ML-737) to his brother-in-law, Norman McLeod.

A short time later, in the early hours of the 15th July 1981, McLeod got into the car parked outside his family home on Rockbank Court at Coolaroo in Melbourne's northern suburbs.

As he started the car to warm the engine, two gunmen on a motorcycle appeared and shot McLeod, killing him instantly.

McLeod's murder was determined by the original detectives as a case of mistaken identity as the gunmen believed that it was Mikkelsen sitting in the car due to the murder occurring just before dawn.

Prendergast went into hiding as well, but disappeared from his home in the Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg West on the 23rd August 1985, his car was found abandoned with the driver's side door open on Brogil Road in Warrandyte, Victoria.

It was believed that Prendergast faked his disappearance and went to Sydney to kill Racing Identity and Casino Boss, George Freeman who Prendergast had blamed for the disappearance and suspected murder of his associate and hitman, Christopher Dale Flannery but Freeman got alerted to Prendergast's arrival and what his intentions were and had Prendergast killed and disposed the same way as Flannery's murder.

Bennett's alleged murderer, Brian Kane later went into hiding for a short period, when he came out of hiding, he was later shot and killed by two unknown gunmen in front of his girlfriend and other witnesses at the Quarry Hotel on Lygon Street in Brunswick East, Victoria on the evening of the 26th November 1982.

It was believed that armed robber and serial prison escapee, Russell "Mad Dog" Cox and his associate and member of the Great Bookie Robbery team, Ian Revell Carroll were the gunmen who had killed Brian Kane in retribution for the killing of Bennett.

Cox was also the common-in-law husband of Bennett's sister-in-law, Helen Deane.

A week before his death, Brian Kane had gone and see Father John Brosnan and told Brosnan that he suspected that friends and associates of Ray Chuck would eventually get him and asked Father Brosnan to conduct his funeral service.

After Brian Kane's murder, Brian and Les' surviving brother, Raymond "Muscles" Kane, fearing he may be the next target of Brian Kane's killers, left Victoria and ended up in Western Australia.

One of Melbourne's emerging crime families, the Morans had offered their condolences and support for Brian Kane.

One of the Morans, Jason Moran (who was 15 at the time) had posted an obituary and signed it, "From your little mate".

Years after the murders of Les and Brian Kane and Raymond Bennett, Jason Moran married Les Kane's daughter from his first marriage, Trish Kane and had two children.

Jason Moran later became involved in the Melbourne Gangland War until he and his associate, Pasquale "Pat" Barbaro were shot and killed by hitman, Victor "The Runner" Brincat as they were sitting in their pale blue Mitsubishi van outside the Auskick Clinic at the Cross Keys Reserve in Essendon on the morning of the 21st June 2003.

Moran's two children were in the van when Moran and Barbaro were killed.

In 2011, Moran's sister-in-law, Suzanne Kane (Les's other daughter also from his first marriage) was convicted and sentenced to two years suspended for her involvement in the murder of Moran's uncle, Desmond "Tuppence" Moran who was shot outside the Ascot Pasta and Deli Cafe in Ascot Vale on the afternoon of the 15th June 2009.
