The white VW is a 1302 Super Beetle - and could it be possible, that the white wagon behind the police-car is something really rare (not only in the USA) a Fiat 128 Familiare (128 Wagon in the USA).

So I start an "Italian car in US-movie-alarm". :D

The words and the shield on the door doesn't look like S.F.P.D.'s.

That's because the door shield was also changed for that era. The lettering around the shield reads "POLICE SERVICES." This was all in a failed effort to make the department appear friendlier and less hostile.

If you notice though, the traditional SFPD star is on the trunk.

Friendlier? PD's have to protect and serve.

Well that's exactly the problem and the reason why it went away ;)

History:
In the late 1960s, New Age philosopher Alan Watts suggested police cars be painted baby blue and white instead of black and white. This proposal was implemented in San Francisco by Chief Charles Gain in the late 1970s. Along with the new color scheme, Gain substituted the City's seal (which appeared on almost all other municipal vehicles owned by San Francisco), with "Police Services" for the department's traditional seven-pointed, blue star logo.

Of course, nobody liked this as it was a stupid idea to begin with.

Yeah. Just reading this sounds like some type of political idea. "To show that police aren't always hostile." What happens when you're staring down the barrel of a gun? You have no choice but to be hostile. But back to the car, black and white with the SFPD star is actually better than "Police Services". It has a pretty authoritive look and feel to it compared to this. I mean the colors are nice, but come on!

I think the blue looks better. Black and white looks kinda bland and ugly I think.

It's traditional, especially for a department such as the San Francisco PD which has a lot of history. This is why a lot of people objected to it.

Sacramento County Sheriff patrol cars are switching from all white to the proper black and white scheme. They are not repainting all patrol cars at once, but waiting until an all white car is retired out of service, then they will replace it with a new patrol car painted in the black and white scheme. Having a "non-hostile" paint colored patrol car is a touchy/feely liberal idea that will hopefully be eradicated soon. But, it is probably easier to sell the retired all white patrol car than black and white retired patrol car.

While black and white are the traditional colors for police cars, a lot of police departments don't want to pay extra for a two-tone paint scheme. In addition, many departments choose to use white cars and reflective markings for maximum visibility. You're also correct that two-tone cars have a lower resale value.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think civilians are even allowed to drive black and white cars in California. I think the CHP made Geek Squad change their livery so that only the roof and pillars are white. The doors, normally white, are black like the doors.
