Is there any particular reason why we call them "ML" instead of "M-Klasse" (analogous to the "S-Klasse")?

ML-Klasse in any case.

Well the "L" has always been there, hasn't it?

Each single model is called ML ___, but the name of the series is M-Klasse. Any Mercedes Benz dealer can confirm that information.

But can you do the same on Mercedes-Benz website where they are also listed as M-Klasse? :p
Indeed it is M-Klasse, but it is well known as ML. So we list them as ML since they are ML-something, like we have some models listed as CE or other partial model names, I'd say.

The particular models aren't called 'M something', because the letter 'M' is a trademark owned by BMW.

Thanks for finally giving me an adequate answer to my question, antp. ;)

At work I would never write ML without the engine size, because this is actually incomplete. If I have no clue of the engine inside, I always write "M-Klasse" and so do our business partners (= Mercedes Benz subsidiaries & authorized dealers). Personally I think it is not correct to name them just ML (hence my question), but if you want to retain that custom, I can accept it.
