Ex-NYC taxi becuase of the long wheelbase

I've told you before, just because it's a taxi-package car (or a long wheel base model), it doesn't mean that it's a former NYC taxi cab ;) Besides, this movie was filmed in Michigan so the chances of that are pretty slim.

From what I can see of it in this picture, it's a 2003+ model (I might be able to narrow it down when I see more of it). I just don't know about the spotlight...it was probably added as an aftermarket item.

Actually ford guy, NYC is the only place that uses the long wheelbase version. All other taxi companies that purchase the taxi package models buy the regular wheelbase version. So this car is 100% for sure an ex-NYC cab.

As far as it being filmed in Michigan, I happen to live right here in Lansing, and there is an ex-NYC taxi long wheelbase Crown Victoria (still in it's original yellow paint) being driven around here by some guy as a daily driver. I see it all the time.

So sorry buddy, but this time it is you who is mistaken, not me ;)

Where exactly did you get the information about the LWB being used exclusively by NYC? And I assume you've talked to the guy who owns that LWB, right?

Actually, I gotta agree with taxiguy on this one. Here in Chicago, our supposedly "royal" Chicago Carriage Company Ford Crown Victorias were actually purchased secondhand from New York City. I drove by a parking lot which contained several NYC LWB Cabs which were all being retrofitted and repainted as Chicago Cabs. Some even still had the roof ad signs from NY.

Well I guess NYC deserves an exclusive item(LWB CV), since they probably buy more taxis from Ford than any other U.S. city. Is there any private taxi companies in NYC? Is NYC the only city in the U.S. that might not allow private companies to compete?

Wonder why Chrysler doesn't market their LWB 300 to taxi companies?

I read an article about the Crown Victoria that said they sell about 4000 taxi package models per year, 3,500 of which go to NYC. The other 500 or so go to other large cities around the country. One company in San Fransico buys around 100 new cabs per year. Which most, if not all, are regular wheelbase Crown Vicorias.

I told you about that article a long time ago :p But anyhow, all I'm trying to say is that I don't know for sure if ALL LWBs go to NYC. Yes, the vast majority do, but for example, I once talked to a taxi cab driver here in LA who had an LWB and he said that his company had bought it new. I'm just saying, I wouldnt be surprised if we find out that a few hundred of those LWBs produced do go to other taxi companies.

And the spotlight also raises some eyebrows (but like I said, it could have been added by any taxi driver for who knows what reason). You can't assume based on just the pictures you see on the internet.

But hey, you may be right. And this may in fact be an old NYC taxi cab. My point is that there might be a slight possibility that it isn't, thats all ;)

But in the end, all that matters is that we can get this CV properly identified, which we did ;)

By the way, back to what Snookie said, here's an article that you and him should enjoy based on what he brought up:

ford_guy-that was intresting-like Austrlia-our old police cars (Commodores, Falcons, Territorys) and other Goverment vechiles (Statesmen, Fairlanes) end up as taxis

Ford_Guy US

Yes indeed. Here too, most old Crown Victoria police cars end up as taxis (not Impalas, not Caprices, just CVs). But this is an interesting read because it is about TAXI-PACKAGE Crown Victorias ending up as...taxis...after their first service is over with :p sounds funny, doesnt it?

While many of the LWB CVs may go to NYC, Ford doesn\'t restrict the sale of them to NYC. Any taxicab company can purchase one. The article mentions that the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission has restrictions on the age of vehicles to three years. As a result used taxicabs can be sold to companies in cities which allow older vehicles to be used as taxicabs. Where I live, the Metroplitan Taxicab Commission requires vehicles used as a taxicabs to be less than 6 years old.

I think a problem for taxicab companies is that many police departments have switched from the CVPI to the Impala. As a result companies aren\'t going to be able to get tons of Crown Vics from govenment auctions. The Crown Vics purchased at auction won\'t be in service very long due to the age limits imposed by taxi/livery commissions. As a result, Ford fleet may end up getting more orders for the Crown Vic, and possibly for the LWB version.

If anything, the Chargers are more of a competition to the CVPI than the Impala. The Impala has been around since 2000 and has never significantly dented sales of CVPIs. Besides, the CV is still by far the most popular police car around. There's certainly no shortage of them so I don't necessarily think that's a problem. Besides, there are so many smaller taxi companies that operate without age limits. NYC itself is slowly introducing more energy-efficient models into their taxi fleet, which means that the number of CV taxis is slowly dwindling.

I know it really doesn't matter (especially not at this point), but I saw the movie again and noticed that this taxi had cloth seats. All NYC taxis have cheap leather seats, so I just wanted to point that out. But it doesn't really matter much anymore anyways.

What?! This car have a spotlight?

Mycroft US

The Crown Vic P70 LWB was not specifically built as a taxi.

Though many were sold to taxi cab companies, they were available as a Special Service Package vehicle for Law Enforcement agencies.
The Michigan State Police included one in their 2002 police vehicle test results publication.

The presence of the spotlight doesn't mean this was definitely used as a police car,
but because the P70 was available to law enforcement fleet purchases,
and because this car has a police-style spotlight on the A-pillar,
I think it's an assumption to call it a Taxi package.
