Yes, 1977 was a most confusing year at Ford. 1. There was a Ford LTD Wagon 2. There was a Ford LTD II Wagon, which is pictured here. 3. There was a Ford LTD II Squire Wagon, which looked like this one: /vehicle_14889-Ford-LTD-II-1977.html It differed from the standard LTD II by its distinctive grille and staggered rectangular headlamps, not to mention the wood grain siding. This LTD II Squire would then become the top wagon for 1978. Know a joke? Walks this guy into the auto parts store and says 'do you have spares for my 77 LTD wagon?'.... |

It's a Mercury Marquis wagon. It is not an LTD II. This is the full-size Ford/Mercury body. Notice that the dual headlights are side-by-side. The LTD II had rectangular quad headlights stacked vertically. There are other photos of the LTD II on the database that show this. Here is a pic of a Grand Marquis. Junkman is mistaken: all '77-78 LTD II cars had the vertically-stacked headlamps. Being a Ford fan and a US native who was into Fords when the cars were new (I bought a '77 Ford new), this is stuff I know. There is a grille variation because the car pictured above is a couple of years newer: I erroneously chose a photo of a newer model Marquis. Regardless, the car in the pic is a full-size Mercury wagon - beyond a doubt. It looks like a '78 or older, but most of those had hidden headlights. I believe it's a low-line model Marquis. If you look closely you'll see the "Mercury" script above the left headlight. I will amend my identification of that wagon. It looks like a Canadian Mercury, the Meteor Montcalm. This is a model that did not appear in the US, was Canadian only. Compare this photo of a '75 Montcalm wagon to that from the film. Where was this film shot? This LTD II Squire would then become the top wagon for 1978." Incorrect: the LTD II series was a midsized car (by then-American standards). LTD II was based on the '72+ Torino/Gran Torino platform. The full-sized LTD was larger and the LTD Squire was the top wagon offered by Ford. The movie car pictured is on the full-size body, shared by Ford (LTD, not LTD II) and Mercury (Marquis). In Canada, there was a separate series from Mercury, the Meteor. The car pictured is a Meteor wagon, probably the Meteor Montcalm. It was not a US model. -- Last edit: 2006-07-13 02:28:49 |

The film was shot in Canada, France and the UK, I believe its a 1975 Mercury Montcalm S/W as previously stated. |

This full-size Mercury body style was built from 1973 thru 1978. Any variation in the grille design from the movie car is probably because of minor yearly styling changes. Search "mercury meteor" on imcdb and you'll find a '75, used in "Category 7: The End of the World", TV movie from 2005. Car pictured here. I don't know where these were built. I know they were built for the Canadian market. But after the mid sixties (with the auto pact trade agreement signed in 1965), there were cars built in here Canada for the US market and there were some built in the US for the Canadian market also... Ford did produce cars here so it's very possible that they were produced in Canada but I don't have this information. I remember there were plenty of these Mercury Meteors back in the early eighties when I was a kid. They didn't have the covered headlights like the Marquis/Grand Marquis. Now, they are quite rare. Just like the cheaper Ford Custom 500, Chevrolet Biscayne and BelAir, the Pontiac Strato-Chief and Laurentian or the Plymouth Fury I and II, not many of these were preserved as they didn't generate the same interest as the more expensive models did (and the interest for any of the barges of the seventies is very limited anyway in North America). The full size cars seem to generate more interest with those of the younger generations (like myself!) that were raised with the boring econoboxes of the eighties. The Mercury Meteor was available in two trim levels. The Rideau and the Montcalm. I don't know how to differenciate them but I think that the Montcalm was a bit more luxurious. I'd like to have more information on these cars from a Mercury fan if there is one on this site! |

Gentlemen, I hope you are still logging-in since 2009. My Father owned a 1976 Mercury Meteor Rideau 500 from 1976 to 1983. It looked exactly like the green station wagon posted from Baldopeacock (I'm willing to bet this was taken from the 'Mercury Archives' website). The green station wagon pictured appears to have 'Montcalm' written on the left front panel, whereas my Dad's had 'Rideau 500'written there - not sure what the differences were between these models if there were any. My Dad's car was white with brown vinyl interior (which had the speedometer/dash cluster/steering wheel exactly like the FOrd LTD), with the ski racks, and crown hubcaps - much like Baldopeacock's Montcalm picture. Essentially it was a Ford LTD with Mercury trim. Unfortunately, my Dad's car did not fair well in the Ottawa salty winters, and he ended up trading it in 1983 (he died in 1987). I also don't have any photos of it, but I managed to obtain the serial number from MTO (Ministry of Trasportation of Ontario) records, and had it decoded. I found out it was built in the Oakville plant near Toronto and had a 400 ci V8. I also found out that 1976 was the last year these models were produced. I think Junkman mis-wrote and was trying to say the car pictured in the Avengers caption was a 1977 Ford LTD station wagon, not LTD II. Its definitely not an LTD II, but I can see how one would think it was the 1977 LTD. However, I don't think the grill looks quite the same as the 1977 LTD, and I believe the 77 LTDs had headlamp covers, which I do not think this car has. In my opinion, the Avengers car looks much more like the 1975 or 1976 Mercury Meteor. -- Last edit: 2010-06-25 16:48:38 |

Having Had a 75 Meteor Wagon I can tell you right off that this is indeed a 75. Mine had a 400 with a mild cam and Hooker Headers. |
