In the DVD commentary Edward Norton talks about how they decided to include the new Beetle among the cars that Tyler and the Narrator smash up, he says he disliked the new Beetle because he feels it's a icon of 60s youth culture and values that is being repackaged and resold to a younger generation by baby boomers who have sold out and become advertising executives, he says it's the like the older generation (the generation that can't understand Nirvana he says) wants them to follow their old ideals and is forcing their old culture on them. This kind of ties in with Fight Club's themes of inter-generational war, the film explores the psyche of Generation X, the disaffected generation that had "no great war and no great depression". Although after he says all this Brad Pitt says that's he's now reversed his stance on the new Beetle, he thinks it's a great reworking of a classic design. Norton says he talking more about the principle of it than the actual look of the car.

It's a great film and this scene always makes me sad -- I have a New Beetle, and had many an old beetle, too!

Edward Norton gets my full accordance. This shitbox of a car is a total annoyance, a hardcore impertinence.
