1990 from the white plate, literally fresh from the dealer. Locally assembled by Service Coy. -- Last edit: 2025-09-14 08:37:37 |

Facelifted, 1989-1990 dip headlights. Brand new 1990 due to the white temporarily plate. Source? Wikipedia didn't list Indonesia as one of its assembly locations. |

Without any more source for the Wikipedia page, I don't think it should be listed as a built in RI car. Here's what it said: "Models sold in Indonesia and Thailand used complete knock-down kits produced in Germany, which were assembled in Jakarta and Bangkok respectively." "Indonesia Service Coy later built the E28, E30, E36, and E34 models, until assembly was taken over by the PT Gaya Motor company in 1993." That first article lead to a website dedicated for 5er cars, definitely not reliable... And the second didn't even give any source. |

We have 2 Thai-build E30s with strange rear panel trim and US-like bumpers (as here). This may be the elusive reference page but it's is all in foreign so I've no idea what it says. |

I was in that page as well 'till I realise that there is a page dedicated specifically for Indonesia and Thailand, here's what is says for those two: Its successor, the BMW E28 (520i), was also assembled in Jakarta at ISC. Unlike the BMW E12, it featured the large bumpers of the US model. Later models (BMW 520iS) featured standard bumpers. The model range was expanded downwards: the BMW E30. The third generation of the vehicle, the BMW E36 and BMW E34, were also manufactured in Indonesia. During this time, BMW separated from the assembly company ISC and switched to P. T. Gaya Motor (GM) in 1993. During the Asian crisis in May 1998, the abandoned ISC buildings fell victim to the Indonesian riots. The ruins were later demolished. Thus, the company YMC Assembly Co., Ltd. was founded in Latkrabang, an eastern district of Bangkok. The BMW 520 was the first vehicle assembled by Yontrakit Motors Assembly. Yontrakit's headquarters are in Prathumwan, Bangkok. This was followed by the BMW 320 (E21), BMW 520i (E28), BMW 316/318i (E30), BMW 520i/525iA (E34), BMW 318i/323iA (E36), BMW 730i/740iAL (E38), and BMW 523iA (E39). In addition to CKDs, CBUs (Completely Build Up) were also imported, such as the BMW 730i (E23). In 1976, the Thai government banned the import of CBUs. In the same year, YMC began assembling other European vehicles. The Peugeot 504 became a best-seller. Also in 1976, ATP Industry Co., Ltd. was founded. It took over the production of local content parts, i.e., parts manufactured locally, for BMW, Citroën, and Peugeot. So we can confirm that it seems that Service Coy also built this E30, the 520i E34 and the 520 E12 in this page for Indonesia and Thailand also received CKD E30 318i/316i via YMC. In hindsight, the Thai/Indonesian spec E30s are quite odd in that they follow the facelift versions of the E30 in 1985 and 1987 but also received additions such as the surfboard style USDM bumpers. Same as well with the entry for the 7er E23 in Catatan Si Boy 1 and E30 from Salah Pencet: /vehicle_1578288-BMW-318i-E30-1986.html /vehicle_1588365-BMW-7-E23.html -- Last edit: 2025-09-14 13:52:11 |

No 316i E30s were ever sold for Indonesia, you'd have to be insanely rich and dumb to be importing a 316i over purchasing a locally built 318i which was the only variant available for the E30 in Indonesia. https://www.threads.com/@brosur_otomotif_indonesia/post/C9e5F8pSXkl https://www.mobilmotorlama.com/2015/05/bmw-318-e30-m10.html?m=1 Here's an 89-90 brochure: -- Last edit: 2025-09-15 01:20:39 |

^ Yes, 318i as the only variant in Indonesia for 1989-1990 finally confirmed. Mystery solved. |
